"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." Isaiah 43:2 I remember coming over to your house to hang and what a joy it was to be around your family. Even though I was a kid at the time; I can see now through his sons what kind of man he was. And now in my own life I can call him brother as I am blessed to be a part of the fire service family. My thoughts and prayers and those of my family are with yours in this difficult time. Much love.
- Michael Swart, Yorktown, VA
Charlie was the first person that I ever met with the Savannah Fire Department. I interviewed him for a documentary film project with SCAD & talking to him made me see my father in Charlie who was also a retired firefighter. I learned a lot about the profession & my father through talking to Charlie on camera. This interview led to me volunteering more with the fire department as a filmmaker & ultimately becoming a firefighter myself at Savannah Fire Department. Charlie will forever be a cornerstone in my career in the fire service & in better understanding my father & a profession I had previously disdained. My father and I grew closer as a result of this chance occurrence with Charlie. I will forever be grateful to Charlie for that reason both in this life & the next.
- Brian C. Magill, Jasper, GA

I'm blessed to say Mr McKenzie was a part of my early - mid teenage years. As I reflect, living across the street and going to school with Eric, Mr McKenzie was voice that I listened to. He is a great father figure, and I know he loved his sons Eric, Neil, Drew and their families with a big heart. My heart goes out to the McKenzie family.
- Chris Fischer, Richmond Hill, Ga
Eric, Neil and Drew, I've been so fortunate to grow up with your mom - I don't remember a time in my life when she and I weren't close, beginning as toddlers. We were teenagers when your mom started dating your dad and he and I became friends. The years have flown by far too quickly and now you're married with families of your own. Brent and I want you to know how much all of you mean to us. Our hearts are heavy with sorrow for each of you.
- Debbie and Brent Rose, Savannah, GA

My thoughts are with your family, Capt and I cross paths in a fire where I was coming down the stairs and he was coming up. We were blocking each other's path and through all the smoke I could only see his blue eyes and his hand pushing me out of the way. We shared the experience later and I've had nothing but respect for him and his family.

I've known Charlie since 1976. I was lucky enough to see his fine sons grow up. We spent many days on the water together, and shared many "war stories" from the fire service. We did boat deliveries up and down the east coast during the early 80's. God bless all you family members and friends as we mourn the loss of a great man.
